WANdisco announces approval of two new US patents for Big Data

Company receives approval for two new patents for adding and removing servers and entire data centers on-the-fly without downtime or data loss

WANdisco (LSE: WAND), a leading provider of continuous-availability software for global enterprises to meet the challenges of Big Data, today announced the approval of two new US patent applications, WAND6649, and WAND6649DIV. Both patents focus on the ability to dynamically add and remove servers from a group of servers across data centers in a distributed computing environment, without any downtime. WAND6649 (US Patent 9,009,215) assumes a single a group of servers. WAND6649DIV assumes that multiple groups of servers and data centers are running in parallel and allows the servers to be moved across these groups without any interruption in access.

These two new patents build on the company’s original patent for the only way to achieve active-active replication over a wide area network with guaranteed data consistency. The unique capabilities covered by these patents have wide application in big data and are included as features in the latest release of WANdisco Fusion, the company’s active-active replication solution for Hadoop® big data deployments within and across data centers.

In most large global enterprises, Hadoop environments are in a constant state of change due to frequent hardware and software upgrades, the addition of clusters at new locations, the continual rollout of new applications, changes in usage patterns, data migration projects and never-ending demands for improved performance. All of these factors put significant pressure on an organization’s big data infrastructure. Costly downtime and data loss are a frequent occurrence during any of these activities with the brittle solutions typically available. With WANdisco’s patented technology, the flexibility to dynamically bring servers and entire data centers online or offline, and redeploy them without losing access to applications or data is now a reality.

“WANdisco was founded on unique, patented technology and these additional patent grants clearly demonstrate that we continue to solve fundamental and hard problems in computer science,” said David Richards, WANdisco Co-Founder and CEO. “I am delighted that we are able to make these innovations available to our customers and partners as part of WANdisco Fusion, enabling them to deploy flexible, enterprise-class big data applications.”

In addition to the three patents already approved, the company has seven patent applications pending and is in the process of filing further applications in the areas of big data and distributed computing.
