Sheffield data company WANdisco lands contract worth $3m

November 30 2020

Live data company WANdisco has won a contract worth $3m with one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies to migrate one of its on-premises data lakes to Microsoft Azure as its embarks on its cloud transformation journey.

The majority of the contract value will be recognised in 2020, Sheffield-based WANdisco said.

David Richards, CEO and Co-founder of WANdisco, said: “This is a landmark deal in our relationship with Microsoft Azure.

“Without the engineering alliance and joint efforts from WANdisco and Microsoft, the deal would not have been possible.

“This opportunity with one of the worlds’ largest telecommunications companies is a fascinating case study for the power and uniqueness of our technology, with further migration potential in the coming years.

“The public availability of our LiveData Platform for Azure has continued to build a growing pipeline of promising opportunities.”

The customer’s decision to migrate was driven by the benefits that the elasticity of cloud computing provides, as its computer usage exhibits large peaks and troughs during the year.

Cloud analytics services will also enable faster and better decision making.

WANdisco’s solution was chosen to mitigate the challenges of moving large-scale Hadoop datasets, particularly as the data in question continues to undergo constant changes.

The customer considered using physical transfer devices, open source tools and packaged software based on open-source software.

WANdisco’s LiveData Migrator addressed the challenges and this was demonstrated through a short production pilot where 100TB was moved over a weekend and the data was immediately available in Azure for use by analytics services.

WANdisco says it is confident of achieving its goals for 2021.
